Footnotes come with default style and format. Sometimes we have a document that has separate chapters and needs to restart the footnotes for every chapter. Otherwise, we also need to include section breaks in chapters and restart footnote numbers after these section breaks. So, let’s know how we can fix it.
Changing the Footnote Numbers in Word
You can easily restart the footnote number at 1 after every page breaks by following a few steps. Here we will learn how to change the footnote Numbers.
Select Your Footnote and Go to Reference tab
At first type your footnote and select it. And go to the Reference tab. Next, click on the smallest icon at the right below of the footnote group.

Make the Changes Under Footnote and Endnote Box
Now, on your screen, show the footnote and endnote box. You can make any changes with this box. We divided this box into four parts. There are –
- Location
- Footnote layout
- Format
- Apply changes to

1. Location:
Usually, we used a footnote at the bottom of the page. But you can also put it in the text below.

2. Footnote layout:

The footnote format is not limited to numbers. Next, click the dropdown arrow to select number format as letters, roman numbers or symbols.

Here you also can use custom symbols. Just click the symbol button and open the symbol menu.

Select your choose able symbol and click the ok button.

If you want your footnote number to start somewhere, then you can fix it by the start option. You have to put the first number in the series.

The numbering option is allowed to change the continuity of your selected number series.
